Thyroid

More than 12% of the United States population may develop a thyroid condition during their lifetime. If fatigue, hair loss, weight gain, sleeping problems, and other thyroid disorder symptoms affect your quality of life, board-certified family physician Maria Berlari MD, FAAFP, and her experienced team offer solutions at Argento Wellness & Aesthetics in Glendale, Arizona. They treat thyroid problems with medications to help you achieve better hormone balance. Schedule an appointment over the phone or online today.

What are thyroid disorders?

Your thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the front part of your neck. It makes thyroid hormone, which controls your metabolism and allows your body to function the way it’s supposed to.

Thyroid disorders affect the amount of thyroid hormone your body produces and may lead to unpleasant symptoms associated with abnormal metabolism.

What are the different types of thyroid problems?

Thyroid problems can make your body produce too much or too little thyroid hormone. Examples of thyroid disorders include:

  • Goiter: enlargement of your thyroid gland
  • Thyroiditis: swelling of the thyroid gland
  • Thyroid cancer: cancer of your thyroid gland
  • Thyroid nodules: lumps on your thyroid gland
  • Hyperthyroidism: excess thyroid hormone production
  • Hypothyroidism: too little thyroid hormone production
  • The thyroid condition you have determines which symptoms you experience and the type of treatment you require.
  • What are the symptoms of thyroid disorders?
  • Signs and symptoms associated with common thyroid disorders include:
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Weight gain
  • Fatigue
  • Forgetfulness
  • Heavy periods in women
  • Dry, coarse hair
  • Dry skin
  • A hoarse voice
  • Cold intolerance
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Weight loss
  • Sleeping problems
  • Irritability
  • Nervousness
  • An enlarged thyroid gland
  • Muscle tremors or weakness
  • Infrequent menstrual periods
  • Vision and eye problems
  • Heat sensitivity

To determine which type of thyroid problem you have, Dr. Berlari reviews your medical history and symptoms.

She completes a physical exam and uses thyroid tests (blood tests) to make a diagnosis. If necessary, Dr. Berlari might also recommend a biopsy or ultrasound.

How are thyroid problems treated?

Depending on the type of thyroid problem you have, Dr. Berlari might recommend one of the following treatments:

Medications

Taking certain medications can normalize thyroid hormone levels within your body. Dr. Berlari might recommend taking natural thyroid hormone for hypothyroidism or radioactive iodine for hyperthyroidism.

Supplements

Many supplements could help you balance thyroid problems and restore a normal thyroid function. At Argento Wellness & Aesthetics, Dr. Berlari will not only check your basic thyroid testing but also will do a complete thyroid panel where she will dive deep into your thyroid problems.

Too often, she sees patients that have thyroid problems, either low or high, and they still don’t feel right. They still have symptoms of fatigue, foggy thinking, or they still can’t shed the extra pounds even though they are doing everything right.

They are under the care of a primary care provider. They have checked their thyroid levels and were told by their primary doctor that “Everything is fine.” But patients are not fine!

Using functional medicine, Dr. Berlari learned to look at the entire picture of thyroid problems and to order other blood tests that primary care doctors won’t order. She has been successful in restoring hormone balance to patients and giving back their normal self.

If you find yourself in the rollercoaster of feeling that “something is not right” and going to your primary care doctor and getting all the results back as normal, please make an appointment at Argento Wellness & Aesthetics. Dr. Berlari would love to help you. Schedule an appointment by phone or online today.
